Karl has been involved in the sport of volleyball for almost 25 years and possesses experience in every facet of the game from playing professionally to teaching clinics at local elementary schools since the mid 1980’s. Karl formally began playing at the Jr College level. As a state champion/Northern California MVP (2), he completed his college playing days in Santa Barbara. After graduating with a degree in Kinesiology he began coaching at the high school level while expanding his outdoor skills and extending his education in Fresno. Upon completion of his first season as varsity coach he was asked to develop the entire girl’s volleyball program for an expansion high school program for Fresno Unified School District.
Pursuing a professional career playing out-door, Karl coached and played establishing himself as a top ranked player competing in both national and internationally based tournaments. He was the top ranked NCVA grass volleyball professional for 5 straight years winning national titles 4 times. Karl also established himself on the beach circuit and competing in AVP and NOVA venues maintaining his AA rating on the beach for nearly 10 years.
Karl’s philosophy is simple… Train hard and play harder. Coaches mean a lot to athletes and I don’t take that for granted, learning the game is only part of what a coach does. I challenge my players to get better both physically and mentally so the skill is easier to learn. Basic fundamentals become automatic through consistency and variety of learning modalities. I evaluate needs, establish a goal directly with the athlete and provide the learning environment to make sure this goal is obtained.
